what IS this thing???
O.k...I THOUGHT saw a hummingbird on my butterfly bush this morning, so I went out to take pictures of it. To my suprise it was NOT a hummingbird....but some sort of insect? The sad thing IS, this is what I had been seeing on my plants last year, and thought it was a hummingbird....it was always so fast that I couldn't see it well. The pictures are a little blurry...the little bugger is fast! But it hovers and flaps it's wings LIKE a butterfly. Can anyone tell me what this is????
o.k...scratch that, ym computer (or vox) isn't cooperating....can't upload MY picture....BUT I looked up Hummingbird moth on google, and I found the pictures! Here's a picture

does anyone know anything about these guys?? THIS is what I thought was a hummingbird from afar.....

I've read about them. The name of this one is new to me. There are also sphynx moths that look like hummingbirds.
You're not the only person to think they were a hummingbird. Guess that's how it got it's name.
We have a good number of real hummingbirds around the house so I think this moth wouldn't fool me. I don't think I've ever seen one. You're lucky!
We've had hummingbirds, when there were red impatiens near the house -- and they have an iridescence that is remarkable-- they sparkle!
I'm sorry we can't see your picture...Vox!!!...today I'm having a little trouble loading the homepage thing...maybe Vox is having a bad day?
So did you actually see any real hummingbirds??? You have to have, haven't you???
I have read the posts but I didn't see anything regarding an explanation so I thought I'd submit my 2 cents worth.
Hmmm . . . not sure why my complete comment didn't post but I'll try to re-create it. The humminhgbird moth is actually the adult of the tomato (or tobacco) hornworm. They are quite scary-looking, but harmless to people, in their worm-like state but are quite devastating to tomato plants. To see a picture of a tomato hornworm, follow this link:
